A grid like the one below shows a musical pattern which is called a bar or a measure.
The beat is known as a pattern on the drums played, there are various types of sounds in these grids but the more commonly used sounds are a kick drum (bass drum), snare ,clap, open and closed hats.
The speed at which the bar play back is called the tempo. The tempo is measured in beats per minute (BPM).
A house track has a bpm usually ranging between 115-130BPM. The example below has a 120 BPM, this means that there are 120 beats every minute. There will be 4 beats within one bar 1, 5, 9, and 13 and this is called ‘Four to the Floor’
Drum N Bass
Drum and Bass usually has a tempo of between 160 – 180 BPM. The example below was at 172BPM. The snare on this pattern falls on the 2nd and the 4th.
Dubstep usually has a BPM between 135-145, this bar was at the tempo of 140BPM.
